What is a matcha latte?
A matcha latte is a frothy and creamy drink made from matcha powder, water and animal or plant milk.
Origin of matcha
Matcha originated in China, but is now almost exclusively associated with Japan and is said to have been introduced to Japan by Zen Buddhist monk Myoan Eisai in the 12th century. Matcha itself is a green tea grown in a shady place.
Matcha is one of the most unique varieties of traditional Japanese tea. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that it is not simply made from scalded tea leaves, but the whole leaf is consumed ground into a fine powder. This means that all the nutrients, antioxidants and active ingredients can be absorbed directly into the body.
The tea plant, which is also used in the making of matcha latte, is harvested during the 2nd and 3rd harvests from tea plants that are specifically shaded from direct sunlight to ensure a higher chlorophyll content. This process not only results in a bright green colour, but also increases the L-theanine content of the tea.
L-theanine has both calming and alertness-enhancing effects. The reason for this is that L-theanine is not a sedative compound, but rather a balancing agent in the brain. The consumption of matcha is an integral part of Japanese culture and is also seen as a drink for mental clarity, calm and health.
